Voluunteer Report - March 09 - by Robert Pepin du Canada 2009.04.15 @ 01:06

March 2009

Report of the orphanage:

Here is a detailed account of our stay at the orphanage in Koh Kong in Cambodia in our passage.

First, we arrived on 24 January at the orphanage in Koh Kong. After a warm welcome from Mary Chan-Thal, Julien and Candice, we were joined by another volunteer to their guesthouse. We got a discount for the room which amounted to $ 6 per night because we were volunteers to the orphanage. It was very appreciated by us.

In the early days, we had a dilemma with the transport since there were more volunteers than bicycles available. So we decided to buy a new bike for the orphanage and begin repairs of older bikes so that everyone can benefit.

At the beginning of the first week, we took time to adjust to the daily life of the orphanage, to know the youth and other volunteers.

We quickly found that all the kids were well supervised and disciplined. Basic needs were met. In short, the children were in a state of mind quite happy and satisfying despite the language barrier, the smiles on their faces say a lot. Thereafter, we were very surprised at the level of resourcefulness among children and especially the responsibility of daily tasks assigned to them in the orphanage.

During our stay at the orphanage, we have found that la''nounou''Chan-Thal was a lot of responsibilities to maintain the smooth running of the orphanage and it demonstrated the ability to manage the orphanage. We felt a great respect from the children for Chan-Thal at our passage.

We found that, on occasion during absences Chan-Thal, the proper functioning of the orphanage could be maintained through a proper autonomy of children.

In our presence, we have given first aid on several occasions for children (infections, fever, etc) .. There were several cases of infections caused by insects on open wounds and not disinfected. A good first kit will definitely be crucial to the orphanage and perhaps even a small pharmacy in key drugs every day.

When we arrived, we finished with the other volunteers paint the building or house boys. Thereafter, we took the time to go round to inspect the facilities and venues to ensure that everything was safe .. There was nothing major but only small improvements and repairs. Example, repair of the stairs, construction of a culvert between the two buildings, construction of the bridge to the world map, put the state tables, etc..

I started to give two English classes per day: one in the morning and late in the afternoon. I found that there were several levels of knowledge of English and different that it would be best to make two groups. That's what we did.

The outputs of Sunday was enjoyable for all. It was the only time we were all together to make a business ... "It was family day"

The output of the boat Saturday was fun for children. We played with them, there were surprises and a movie ... and played great soccer.

The exit to the beach was also memorable for all. The guys played football, girls have picked up seashells .... Lots of fun and memories. The kids were excited to swim in the sea

In English classes, I took advantage of their opportunity to teach a little geography with the world map purchased. The pleasure and interest were still present during the English course and I could see that several of them have improved significantly during our stay ...

Best regards to all
Bob

Following the media campaign of the Container - by Aline Honorine Fitte - Presidente 2009.03.28 @ 01:16

Dear Friends,

We Receives MANY YEM, our heroine from city of Rouen to collect donations for Cambodia.

She is very moved to visit the orphanage in Kien Kleang, very dilapidated, it must be admitted ... The kids were a little scattered.

The White Elephant has agreed to help its that since January 2009 ... and we have not yet fully established and above all, try to recruit a local person who speaks French or English . It is a difficult task because it is far easier to find (and quite expensive) a person to make the connection between volunteers, the children on site and the association and in our treasury is also a little " limit ".

I call for financial donations as well to readers of this message so that we can recruit a long term, a local person here in Phnom Penh (the Capital is deemed to earn more than the provinces). It is our priority, recruit someone to serve as a link.

Meanwhile, the arrival of the container, MANY decided to go and help our other pending orphanage in Koh Kong. It is therefore a party for a few days there and return at Kien Kleang later.

A lot photos of Cambodia and media materials on the collection of Rouen will be soon on the blog ... it's very long to download and Cambodia the Internet lacks a little power!

Sincerely
Aline Honorine Fitte
